Pedestrian Safety

Ever since the motor vehicle replaces the horse and buggy, pedestrians have had to contend with vehicles. The rise of vehicles has changed how we travel on roads and walkways. But, never in the history of vehicles has it been more dangerous for pedestrians to get around. This is not just a U.S. problem, this is a worldwide problem. But, in the U.S. tens of thousands of people are injured or killed by vehicles colliding with pedestrians.

In 2003, a report from PEDSAFE discussed the magnitude of the problem for pedestrians in the U.S. There were nearly 5,000 deaths representing over 10 percent of the over 40,000 motor vehicle deaths across the country. Drops in pedestrian deaths are correlated to less walking by pedestrians, which makes it hard to promote healthy walking habits for pedestrians, while also promoting safety for motor vehicle drivers. Studies show that those most at risk for pedestrian injury and death are the very aged, 65 and older, and males (especially in urban areas where traffic is heavier and nearly 85 percent of pedestrian accidents happen) versus only 14 percent of pedestrian accidents occurring in rural areas. The fatalities of those injured is also higher in the elderly than it is in children under the age of 14.

Location is also important when discussing pedestrian accidents. Most accidents, nearly 65 percent, occur at non-intersections, especially with children under age 9 where they dart in front of traffic. People age 45 to 65 are about equal in their distribution of accidents between intersections and non-intersections. Although, older pedestrians are more likely to suffer more serious injuries or a fatality from a collision than younger pedestrians. This is usually due to their inability to move quickly or try to avoid the collision.

When pedestrian accidents the driver may be at fault for causing injury or death based upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, visibility, speed, and distraction.
