Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Threat

We have all seen the commercials and products to help monitor carbon monoxide (CO) threats in the home. However carbon monoxide detectors are not as common as smoke detectors or other safety devices like fire extinguishers, and they should be. Carbon monoxide is a silent, odorless, tasteless, and colorless killer. It is the leading cause of death by poisoning in the United States, claiming over 200 lives per year.

The Underwriters Laboratory (UL), a global independent safety science company, warns consumers how to check for early signs of CO such as soot or carbon streaks around the service entry of fuel-burning appliances, lack of draft the chimney of a home, soot falling into the fireplace or water leaks at the base of the chimney, rusting on flue pipes and jackets, discolored or breaking bricks at the base of the chimney, rusting at the top of the vent pipe visible from outside the house and moisture on the walls of furnace room windows or walls.

Carbon monoxide detectors can help protect a family from CO poisoning caused by faulty devices or appliances in the home such as fireplaces or gas heaters. An insurance agent writes that CO detectors should be connected to smoke detectors so that the alarm can alert the household in case of CO poisoning. Since CO detectors only last for 2-3 years they should be checked and replaced often. They also recommend that all fuel-burning appliances be checked by a technician regularly to prevent malfunction.

When CO poisoning cannot be prevented using these methods, detection is key. CO poisoning can cause flu-like symptoms, fatigue, dizziness, headache, confusion, tightness in the chest, and eventually death. Any detection should immediately be taken seriously and people and pets should exit the home and seek medical attention.
