People of all ages in North Dakota are excited about the summer and the many activities that are available to them. This is particularly true for older people who might have trouble getting out and about during the harsh winter months and for young people who are off from school.
Unfortunately, there are inherent risks that accompany many summer activities.
Recently, those who oversee road safety in the state expressed worry over the increased potential of auto accidents in the summer, specifically for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. This is something to think about when trying to stay safe. Those who have been in an accident should also think about how to address the challenges they will inevitably face.
North Dakota has historically had more accidents in the summer
According to the North Dakota Highway Safety Division, there are more auto accidents in the state during the summer. The most vulnerable people are those who are using the roads without the protection of an automobile of their own. If, for example, a bicyclist is hit by a car, they are prone to more severe injuries that someone who was riding in an automobile.
Statistically, there were 10 pedestrians and 16 motorcyclists who lost their lives in a crash in 2023. As of late-July 2024, there were seven motorcycle fatalities and two pedestrian deaths. Drivers are advised to be aware of areas where there are likely to be pedestrians and cyclists. It can be easy to miss motorcyclists if drivers are not keeping a watch for them and this can lead to a collision from failing to share the road, not looking at mirrors and when making turns.
The state’s Vision Zero program has set an ambitious goal to eliminate all motor vehicle fatalities. Despite improvements in safety technology and education for drivers and others on the road, road deaths remain something to be fearful of.
Confronting the future after an auto accident can be complicated
Whether there were injuries or a loss of life after an auto accident, it is imperative for people to think about how they will move forward. Financially, personally, professionally and emotionally, there is much to consider.
Knowing how and why the accident occurred is a fundamental part of deciding how to proceed. Making a full recovery involves determining how the accident happened and understanding what obstacles need to be addressed. It is wise to be prepared from the start and to know what options are available to recover for all that was lost.
