Cronobacter Sakazakii Bacteria
Cronobacter is a multi-species complex of bacteria that can be found in dry foods like infant formula, herbal teas, and starches. While illnesses are rare, newborns are especially susceptible to infection, which can be fatal.
Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria may cause different kinds of infections and symptoms depending on the age and health status of the patient. In infants, cronobacter bacteria cause sepsis or severe meningitis. Sometimes these infections cause seizures, brain abscesses, hydrocephalus, or other serious conditions that may cause long-term neurological damage.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that at least two to four infections occur per year, but reporting is not required in every state. A national survey found that infections may occur within one in every 100,000 infants younger than 1 year. Higher infection rates occur among low-birth and premature infants.
How Does Infant Formula Become Contaminated?
Powdered baby formula is not sterile, which means it may contain contaminates from dust particles to dangerous bacteria. Currently, no manufacturing methods exist to make infant formula sterile.
Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria may enter the formula powder if contaminated raw materials are used to create it or if it comes in contact with a contaminated surface during the manufacturing process. For example, the infant formula container makes contact with a contaminated surface and contaminates it once it is poured into the container.
The Abbott Nutrition Recall
Abbott Nutrition has issued a voluntary recall on all infant formula brands, including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare. The recall comes after four infants were hospitalized with cronobacter sakazakii bacterial infections, and one infant died. Doctors linked the infections to formula products from Abbott Nutrition’s Michigan plant.
The FDA urges parents to check if their formula could be affected by the recall. All products with a code beginning in numbers between 22-37 and containing K8, SH, or Z2 with an April 1, 2022, expiration date are a part of the recall. Parents with these products should stop using them immediately and contact their health care provider as soon as possible.
Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent worse symptoms from occurring. Premature babies and newborns are at high risk for sepsis and other serious neurological conditions which may cause death or permanent internal damage.
