What Is Paraquat Dichloride?

Paraquat dichloride is a toxic chemical and one of the most widely used herbicides worldwide. Agricultural workers use it to control weeds and other unwanted plants. Because it is extremely poisonous, only  licensed applicators can use paraquat in the United States. Additionally, the chemical is marked with a blue dye, a sharp odor, and an agent that causes vomiting if ingested.

In other countries, including those in the European Union, paraquat is illegal and not available for use. Fatal after just one sip, the herbicide has been linked to suicide in many parts of the world, and accidental ingestion, skin exposure, or inhalation can lead to paraquat poisoning, which causes direct damage to the lining of the mouth, stomach, or intestines.

After ingesting or being exposed to paraquat, someone may experience:

  • Pain and swelling of the mouth and throat
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Fast heart rate
  • Injury to the heart
  • Heart failure
  • Muscle weakness
  • Lung scarring
  • Fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema)
  • Respiratory failure
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Liver Failure
  • Coma
  • Death

Some symptoms emerge immediately, and others can occur within a few hours or days. There is no antidote to paraquat poisoning, and researchers are still exploring the long-term health effects of paraquat exposure. Even when used correctly, the herbicide may not be safe.

Does Paraquat Cause Parkinson’s Disease?

Part of the reason paraquat is illegal in other countries is due to a convincing link to Parkinson’s disease and other negative human health outcomes, including cancer. Paraquat has been linked to Parkinson’s disease in several studies, including the Agricultural Health Study, but scientists have not objectively proven that the herbicide causes Parkinson’s disease in humans.

Still, many registered users of paraquat have developed Parkinson’s disease, and manufacturers never mentioned a risk of neurological harm.

Paraquat Lawsuits: Did Manufacturers Fail to Warn?

Many plaintiffs have already come forward with lawsuits against Syngenta, the manufacturer of Gramoxone (a brand-name herbicide containing paraquat dichloride), Growmark (another manufacturer), and Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., the company that distributes paraquat in the United States and Canada.

According to these lawsuits, Syngenta, Growmark, and Chevron failed to warn consumers that paraquat could cause Parkinson’s disease, and their products are defective in design.

Although paraquat has been the subject of more than 125,000 lawsuits, paraquat litigation is still in its early stages, so juries have not released verdicts and no settlements have been made as of June 7, 2021.
